Jennifer Flatté

As a Rabbi and educator, Jennifer Flatté has worked throughout the United States, giving lectures, organizing events, and developing education programs for all ages. Her training as a Rabbi has given her an ease in making people comfortable, an ability to synthesize and then simplify complex information, and has left her unafraid to ask difficult questions. It is these skills that have brought her to her current position as CEO of a deep-tech quantum startup. While she has no professional training in quantum science, she has a demonstrated ability to understand the basics of the work being done by QuantCAD, the short and long term implications of that work, and the skill to translate that work into terms accessible to non-scientists.

Educated at Harvard University, University of California at Santa Barbara, and Hebrew Union College, Flatté has spent much of her adult life building community ties between organizations that serve the public. While much of her community based work has focused on organizations that prioritize youth engagement, she has also been active in providing opportunities for personal growth and development across a wide spectrum of communities. During the last 30 years, she has held leadership positions in organizations ranging from Synagogues to the Girl Scouts. During that time, she has overseen rapid community growth in the synagogue, rebuilt a youth hockey league, reinvigorated a flagging swim club, and taught life skills as a member of the Mother-to-Mother ministry. Her unusual career path was highlighted in “Open to Difference”, an article published in the Sept-Oct 2008 issue of Harvard magazine.

Rabbi Flatté has successfully built-up numerous organizations through her ability to network with local businesses, manage business-wide logistics, and to identify unique solutions for complex problems. In 2020 she received her Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, for her significant contributions to the many communities that she serves.

When she is not in  the office, she can be found playing with her grandchildren, running in the park, officiating on a pool deck, writing commentary, wielding a glue gun, baking bread, or learning hieroglyphics.

Research

Professor Michael Flatté's research investigates the optical and electrical control of electron, ionic, and nuclear spins in materials, novel "spintronic" devices, quantum sensors, and solid-state realizations of quantum computation. These studies range from the atomic-scale modification of a host by a single defect atom to the stability of macroscopic coherent phenomena such as spin waves. He has developed a range of computational approaches to these calculations, and applied them to predict the local electronic and magnetic properties of defects and dopants in semiconducting materials, the novel behavior of electronic and spin excitations in artificial structures, and the evolution of entanglement in hybrid quantum coherent systems. His predictions have been verified by measurements of atomic-scale tunneling (nanoscale devices and scanning tunneling spectroscopy), ultrafast optical probes of spin coherence and spin-dependent recombination, as well as via novel device performance.

As spin provides a robust high-temperature realization of quantum coherence these predictions have led Prof. Flatté to propose several new classes of spintronic devices, including spin transistors, spin-based teleportation protocols, single-photon detectors and organic light emitters, leading to 10 patents. He continues to explore the application of spin to quantum information, including for room-temperature quantum sensors and high-speed scalable manipulation of quantum information.

Biography

Michael E. Flatté received the A.B. degree in physics from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 1988, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA, USA, in 1992. He is a Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, The University of Iowa (UI), Iowa City, IA, USA. After his post-doctoral work at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California at Santa Barbara, and the Division of Applied Sciences, Harvard University, he joined the faculty at UI in 1995. He has an adjunct appointment as a Professor at the Department of Applied Physics, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

Dr. Flatté has over 270 publications and ten patents. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Physical Society (APS), and was chair of the Division of Materials Physics of APS from 2016 to 2017. In 2019 he developed the first course on Quantum Engineering for the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. He is a 2022 Distinguished Lecturer for IEEE Magnetics Society.
